Prince Andrew Seeks Judicial Review Over Lawfulness of Epstein-Linked Arrest and Raids
Andrew takes police to court over Epstein arrest

Prince Andrew has filed for a judicial review of Thames Valley Police's decision to arrest him and the warrants used to search Sandringham and Royal Lodge. His February arrest at Marsh Farm — on his 66th birthday — followed publication of material from the Epstein files alleging he shared information with Jeffrey Epstein while a trade envoy. Investigators say the probe has been hampered by the US Department of Justice's refusal to provide unredacted files, and a private High Court hearing will consider release of documents linked to the review. The move keeps the high-profile inquiry under close legal and public scrutiny.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has launched a judicial review challenging the lawfulness of his February arrest and the search warrants that led police to raid properties at Sandringham and Royal Lodge.

Legal Challenge

The former Duke of York asked a High Court judge to determine whether Thames Valley Police acted lawfully when it obtained warrants from an Old Bailey judge and executed searches of his Marsh Farm home in Norfolk (where he was arrested), Sandringham Estate and his former Windsor residence at Royal Lodge. Permission to proceed with the judicial review was granted earlier this year.

What Happened

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February at Marsh Farm on his 66th birthday and taken about 40 miles to Aylsham Police Station, where he was questioned for nearly 12 hours on suspicion of misconduct in public office before being released under investigation. Detectives spent several days searching his properties, removing documents and other material.

Basis Of The Inquiry

The arrest followed publication of material from the Epstein files that suggested the former duke may have shared information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a UK trade envoy between 2001 and 2011. Reports have alleged he forwarded accounts of overseas visits and a confidential briefing note on investment opportunities in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Practical Obstacles For Investigators

Investigators have faced difficulties obtaining unredacted material from the US Department of Justice; the DOJ has declined to hand over an unredacted copy of the Epstein files, and formal international requests for the documents could take more than a year and are not guaranteed to succeed.

Upcoming Hearing And Secrecy

A private hearing is scheduled at the High Court later this week to decide whether certain documents related to the judicial review should be released. Mountbatten-Windsor's legal team is seeking disclosure of the search-warrant paperwork and related material to test whether police procedures were properly followed.

Reaction And Context

The arrest, the most senior in modern times for a member of the royal family, drew intense public attention. Buckingham Palace said the king received no prior notice; the monarch issued a statement at the time saying "the law must take its course." Friends say Mountbatten-Windsor feels he is "living in limbo" and has largely remained at Sandringham while the inquiry continues. Thames Valley Police has said the investigation will also examine allegations of sexual misconduct and has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Note: This account summarises publicly reported developments and does not assert guilt. The judicial review will test the legality of police actions rather than the underlying allegations.
