Two PlusAI trailers carrying simulated loads — each containing roughly 20,000 pounds of sand — were stolen and later recovered, Wired reports. The trailers bore Nvidia and PlusAI branding, and thieves likely expected costly AI GPUs rather than sand. The theft was spotted when an acquaintance saw the trailers near their workplace and alerted a PlusAI executive, prompting police recovery. The incident reflects growing opportunistic thefts tied to rising GPU and RAM prices amid rapid AI data‑center expansion.

Thieves apparently targeted trailers branded with Nvidia and PlusAI logos expecting racks of valuable AI GPUs — but the haul turned out to be 40,000 pounds of sand. Wired reports that two trailers owned by autonomous trucking startup PlusAI were taken and later recovered intact at a separate location, each containing roughly 20,000 pounds of sand used as simulated cargo.

What Happened

PlusAI, which works with Nvidia and marks some rigs with both companies' logos, uses heavy simulated loads in its trailers to test how fully loaded semi‑trailers behave under real‑world conditions. According to the company, the truck cabs — which may contain advanced AI hardware — were locked inside a warehouse, while the trailers were left outside and secured with hand locks.

The theft was discovered when a senior PlusAI executive received a message from an acquaintance who had spotted the trailers — described to them as "trucks" — about half a mile from PlusAI’s facility. Police were notified and recovered the trailers with the sand still inside.

"PlusAI uses simulated loads in its trailers to assist with research and development testing," company spokesperson Lauren Kwan told Wired, adding that the two recovered trailers held "40,000 pounds of sand intact."

Broader Context

The incident highlights a wider spike in opportunistic theft tied to rising prices for GPUs and RAM as AI data‑center construction accelerates. Criminals have targeted everything from individual components to entire cargoes; previous incidents have included multi‑million‑dollar hardware thefts and bold attacks on security escorts attempting to move valuable equipment.

While this particular attempt yielded only sand, the episode underscores the need for stronger physical security around visible, high‑value branding and equipment during the current AI hardware boom.
