Supporters and mourners gathered across the Middle East over the weekend to mark the second anniversary of the death of longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Events in Beirut, Baghdad and Tehran combined solemn remembrance with public displays of support for the late leader.
In Baghdad, participants carried large portraits of Nasrallah, waved Iraqi and Iranian flags, and marched holding burning torches in a nighttime procession. Organizers described the gathering as an expression of solidarity with Hezbollah and with regional allies.
In Beirut, thousands assembled near the site of Nasrallah's mausoleum in the southern suburbs. Some attendees were visibly mourning, while others chanted slogans, raised their fists and displayed banners and flags. The atmosphere ranged from somber to vocally defiant.
In Tehran, a prominent billboard bearing Nasrallah's image was displayed alongside a Hezbollah flag, underscoring the enduring ties between Tehran and the group.
Background
Nasrallah led the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah for more than three decades and became one of the region's most prominent and polarizing figures. He was killed on Sept. 27, 2024, in a massive Israeli airstrike that flattened an entire block in Beirut's southern suburbs while he was reportedly meeting senior Hezbollah commanders and an Iranian general.
His death represented a major blow to Hezbollah's leadership, but Nasrallah remains a revered figure among the group's supporters and allied actors across the region. Analysts say the anniversary events serve both as mourning rituals and as political demonstrations that signal continued regional alignments and tensions.
