A 30-year-old Israeli man was killed near the Neve Tzuf settlement north of Ramallah just hours before Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the suspected shooter fired from a vehicle and fled on foot. After a search, the suspect — who the military said was injured while fleeing — was located at a hospital where he had sought treatment and was detained.

Less than an hour later, the IDF said it shot and killed a Palestinian man who allegedly attempted to carry out a ramming attack against soldiers at an intersection near Jenin in the northern West Bank. The military said it was still searching for a second occupant of the vehicle.

The U.N. said this was the second time this year an Israeli civilian was killed in a confrontation with a Palestinian in the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incidents "despicable" and ordered expanded military operations across the West Bank.

Tensions across the West Bank have risen sharply in recent months. Rights groups and Palestinian officials report a surge in attacks by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians, a trend critics link to encouragement from right-wing, ultra-nationalist politicians in Israel's government. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli forces carried out a large counterterrorism operation in the northern West Bank town of Al-Mughayyir; Palestinian officials reported at least 28 detainees.
Regional Reaction to Houthi Strike
Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait issued statements condemning the Houthi missile strike on the Saudi capital, calling it a threat to regional security and a violation of international law. The Muslim World League also condemned the attack. Saudi authorities reported the missile was intercepted and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The attack marked the first time the Saudi capital was targeted since the recent escalation broadened the conflict involving Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Trial of French Nationals in Iraq
Separately, Iraqi judicial and security officials told The Associated Press that six French nationals suspected of ties to the Islamic State group have gone on trial in Iraq. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, said the legal process could include multiple hearings before a verdict is reached. These six are among 47 French nationals held in Iraq who were repatriated from neighboring Syria earlier this year.
