The operation ran from Aug. 30 through Sept. 3 and concentrated on the Indianapolis metropolitan area while also reaching other parts of the state. ICE described the action as part of a "quieter" ramp‑up in enforcement following earlier, more public campaigns that drew significant backlash.

ICE said some of those detained had criminal histories but did not specify whether that applied to all arrestees. The agency added that its actions in Indiana were similar to enforcement operations it conducted in Atlanta and the Washington, D.C., area.

The presence of ICE officers unsettled local communities. According to a report by public radio station WFYI, students and families at one Indianapolis school experienced a steep decline in attendance after agents were seen in the area.

"This is impacting everybody, no matter what (legal) status they have," a school administrator told WFYI.

Local leaders said they received little advance notice of the operation: Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett (D) and Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) both said they had not been informed prior to the enforcement activity.
