‘LEGO Bandit’ Arrested After U‑Haul Chase; Police Say He Stole Thousands in High‑Value Sets

Law enforcement in Northeast Florida say Ronald Lorne Tipton — nicknamed the "LEGO Bandit" by investigators — allegedly stole high‑value LEGO sets from multiple stores and fled a confrontation in a U‑Haul. Authorities tied Tipton to a series of organized thefts after a detective reviewed surveillance and store loss reports at Target and Walmart locations on State Road 200 in Yulee.
What Investigators Say Happened
According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Tipton allegedly targeted only higher‑priced LEGO sets, placed them in shopping carts, and exited stores through emergency doors without paying. Surveillance footage and the investigation indicate getaway vehicles were staged outside emergency exits so stolen merchandise could be quickly loaded and removed.
Three alleged thefts at the Yulee Target occurred on Aug. 18, Aug. 26 and Sept. 12. On Aug. 18 Tipton is accused of taking four high‑value LEGO sets, causing a loss of more than $900. On Aug. 26 surveillance reportedly captured him loading multiple sets into a white Mazda; combined losses from the two Target incidents are estimated at about $2,500. On Sept. 12 investigators say he stole five more sets valued at just under $1,300.

The Walmart Confrontation And Pursuit
Investigators say the scheme continued into mid‑September. On Sept. 15 Tipton allegedly targeted the Walmart on State Road 200, where video shows him surveying the LEGO aisle, briefly entering a U‑Haul and then returning to remove 12 more LEGO sets. Store staff attempted to confront him, and he fled.
An NCSO investigator later spotted the U‑Haul and tried to stop it; authorities say the suspect struck the investigator's left arm with the open driver's door before driving off erratically. The vehicle fled toward Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach, moving through several parking lots until deputies maneuvered the truck and pinned it against a tree. Fernandina Beach police assisted in taking Tipton and a second suspect, Jessica Underwood, into custody. Underwood was later booked on unrelated drug charges.
Scope Of The Case And Charges
Investigators linked Tipton to additional retail thefts across Northeast Florida and say the total value of stolen merchandise now exceeds $20,000. Tipton faces multiple charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer; aggravated fleeing with injury or damage; coordinating others in retail theft over $3,000; dealing in stolen property; possession of controlled substances; and driving under the influence.
