A multi-vehicle crash on the N1 highway in the Western Cape has killed 21 people and left at least four others seriously injured, authorities said.
The collision occurred in the early hours of Monday and involved two Toyota minibus taxis and a Suzuki sport utility vehicle, Warrant Officer Christopher Spies of the South African Police Service told reporters. Eighteen victims were declared dead at the scene; three more were later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the crash closed the N1 about 380 km (240 miles) east of Cape Town, between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka. Emergency services, forensic teams and traffic officials remained at the scene as authorities continued their assessment. The RTMC warned the death toll "may change as emergency services and authorities in the Western Cape continue their assessment of the scene."

Road fatalities are a persistent problem in South Africa. The Transport Ministry reported nearly 11,500 road deaths in 2025. The N1 crash was one of two serious incidents over the past two days: an earlier accident near Ermelo in Mpumalanga province on Sunday killed eight people. In 2023, a head-on collision in Limpopo between a tour bus and a cash-in-transit truck left 20 dead and dozens injured.
Authorities have not yet released details on the crash's cause. Investigations typically examine factors such as speed, vehicle condition, driver fatigue or impairment and road conditions; officials said inquiries were under way.
