On the night of September 11, private security at Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff's Malibu property intercepted a trespasser before the person reached the residence, Harris' spokesperson said.
Private guards stopped the individual at about 10:30 p.m. and notified the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies later arrived, spoke with the security team and found the person outside the property by the time officers reached the scene.
'The individual who was outside of the property upon our arrival was warned and advised by deputies to leave the premises and left voluntarily without incident,' a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said.
Harris' spokesperson Eduardo Negrón added: 'Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff's property before the individual reached the home.' He confirmed that neither Harris nor Emhoff were present and said the couple are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly.
Authorities filed a trespassing report after the encounter, and the sheriff's department said it will increase patrols in the area as a precaution.
Context
The incident occurs amid changes to Harris' federal protection. Federal law provides former vice presidents and certain immediate family members Secret Service protection for up to six months after leaving office. Before leaving office, President Joe Biden had extended Harris' protection for an additional 18 months. President Donald Trump later ended that extension; in an August 28 letter he directed officials to discontinue security measures beyond those required by law, effective September 1, 2025, according to reports. Since then, Harris has relied on private security, including the detail that responded during this incident.
No injuries were reported and officials said there was no evidence of an ongoing threat.
