Ukraine and Germany have begun European production of the BARS jet-powered strike drone, with the latest variant reportedly reaching about 1,000 km and carrying up to 60 kg of warhead. Production began in early September, funded initially by Germany, and first deliveries are expected from 10 October 2026. Engine (turbojet) availability is the main constraint, while modular design and AI-assisted guidance increase operational flexibility and impact.

Ukraine has begun manufacturing its BARS jet-powered strike drone in Europe, advancing a joint Ukrainian–German effort to scale production and protect output from strikes on domestic facilities. Production started in early September, and the first finished systems are expected to be delivered to Ukraine's armed forces from 10 October 2026.

Production, Partnership and Timeline

The program follows a July 8 agreement between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Germany is financing the initial production stage and supporting the supply chain; however, turbojet engine availability remains the primary bottleneck determining how quickly airframes can be completed.

Capabilities and Design Flexibility

Developers say BARS can cruise at speeds above 700 km/h. Successive upgrades have reportedly extended the latest configuration's reach to around 1,000 kilometres and increased its maximum warhead capacity from roughly 22.5 kg on early models to as much as 60 kg.

The airframe is intentionally modular: internal volume can be reallocated between fuel and payload depending on mission needs. Longer-range strikes use additional internal space for fuel; shorter-range missions can devote that space to heavier or larger warheads.

Variants and Upgrades

BARS has undergone more than 40 design iterations since the prototype stage. The platform is organised into three families—DeepStrike, MiddleStrike and FrontStrike—each optimised for different ranges and battlefield roles.

AI, Guidance and Mission Control

Project engineers say artificial intelligence now contributes across several phases of development, from engineering tasks to the drone's terminal guidance. As one developer put it, 'We use the tools that AI technologies provide us today, and we do not shy away from them at any level—from development and solving engineering problems to implementing machine vision in our target-guidance systems.'

During the drone's terminal phase, operators retain the option to continue manual control or transfer guidance to an optical (vision-based) system for final target acquisition.

Strategic Implications

Shifting production to Europe reduces the risk that manufacturing will be disrupted by strikes inside Ukraine and eases pressure on Kyiv's defence budget thanks to German financing. For Germany, the partnership signals a move toward building a longer-term Ukrainian defence-industrial capability rather than relying solely on one-off arms transfers.

Analysts say a longer-range, heavier-payload drone with AI-assisted guidance forces adversaries to extend air-defence coverage deeper behind front lines, increasing operational costs for defense and potentially shaping future allied co-production models.
