The required containers are city-branded black NYC Bins: rodent-resistant, fitted with latching lids, and designed to work with mechanical tippers being installed on sanitation trucks. A common mistake is assuming any lidded can will do—regular household trash must be placed in a black NYC Bin.
Fines And Enforcement
Fines escalate for repeat offenses: $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second, and $200 for the third and each subsequent violation. That can add up quickly, so complying now is the simplest way to avoid costly tickets.

You do not need to wait for a city distribution. NYC Bins are stocked at Home Depot locations across the five boroughs and can also be ordered for delivery through DoorDash, Instacart and Uber Eats. Prices typically range from about $45 to $55, depending on capacity.
What You Don’t Need To Do
Don’t feel pressured to buy matching bins for every waste stream. The official-bin requirement applies only to regular trash. Compost may be set out in any sturdy, properly labeled container with a secure lid, and recyclables should go in a designated recycling container or an approved clear plastic bag.
Possible Reimbursement For Some Homeowners
Some one- and two-family homeowners may qualify to recover the cost of one official 45-gallon NYC Bin. Eligibility is limited to owners who received a School Tax Relief (STAR) property-tax exemption or credit in 2024 or 2025. Applications are due today and require the voucher number issued by the Department of Finance plus proof of purchase. If you have misplaced a receipt, DSNY accepts alternative documentation such as a photo of the bin or a bank statement.
