What Happened
Central Marin Fire received the first calls just after 4:15 a.m. and extinguished the fire in roughly 15 minutes, according to CBS News Bay Area. Video and on-scene reports show the worst damage concentrated on two vehicles: one was heavily charred with shattered windows and severe destruction to the roof, hood and passenger compartment, while other Teslas on the lot sustained varying degrees of damage.
Why Investigators Are Concerned
Fire investigators returned to the site later that morning and said the circumstances did not appear accidental. Authorities indicated they would focus on security footage, physical evidence around the vehicles, and eyewitness statements to determine cause and origin. Police also canvassed nearby apartments for potential witnesses.
Resident Adam Sherry told CBS he could see the flicker of flames through his blinds, heard popping from the burning vehicles and saw sparks shooting to the sides.
Battery Risk and Fire Response
Officials noted a key mitigating factor: the primary battery of the most heavily damaged Tesla did not ignite. When an EV battery is involved, crews sometimes must allow it to burn out under controlled conditions, which can extend the incident and increase hazards. That complication did not occur here, helping firefighters bring the situation under control quickly.
Context and Next Steps
KRON4 footage captured four Teslas in a taped-off rear portion of the property, but it was not immediately clear whether all were dealership inventory or vehicles brought in for service. Tesla’s Corte Madera location lists the site at 201 Casa Buena Drive as a service center with store and delivery operations.
While other Tesla locations have been targeted by arson or vandalism in recent years, Central Marin Fire said it had not previously handled a similar incident locally and no motive or link to other incidents has been released. The investigation remains active as authorities review video, collect statements and examine physical evidence.
