Florida Man Arrested After Charging Uniformed Officer in Hospital Waiting Room

A routine visit to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale on August 29 ended with a 51-year-old man in custody after, police say, he charged and grabbed a uniformed off-duty Fort Lauderdale officer who had been summoned to the hospital waiting room.
What Happened
According to an arrest report obtained by The Independent, Ronald Jeffery Johnson began yelling at medical staff and alarming other patients in the waiting area. When an officer who was working an off-duty detail in full uniform arrived, Johnson allegedly singled him out, declared,
"I want to fight you,"and charged at the officer, grabbing him. A struggle followed as the officer attempted to restrain Johnson.
Injuries and Booking
Both men were hurt in the scuffle. The officer sustained a cut to his left hand that required multiple stitches. Johnson suffered facial injuries and was treated at the hospital before being medically cleared and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. His booking photograph, taken in 2025, shows marked swelling, bruising and dried blood around his nose and mouth; the arrest report does not specify exactly how each injury occurred.
Outstanding Warrant From Georgia
While processing the Florida case, investigators discovered an active Georgia warrant for Johnson tied to a failure-to-appear charge in a 2023 case involving alleged terroristic threats. Local reports say the Georgia arrest followed an incident in Cave Spring where Johnson allegedly threatened someone with a boat paddle in front of that person's 8-year-old child.
Charges and Court Status
Broward County court records list the matter as State of Florida v. Ronald Jeffery Johnson, case number 26010473CF10A, filed August 30 as an active criminal felony case. Charges include:
- Aggravated battery on an officer (first-degree felony)
- Resisting an officer with violence (third-degree felony)
- Assault on an officer, firefighter, or emergency medical technician (first-degree misdemeanor)
- Disorderly conduct (first-degree misdemeanor)
A magistrate found probable cause on August 31. The docket also records orders for medical and mental-health screening and permits a representative to photograph Johnson's injuries. Bail was set at $8,500 and, as of early September, Johnson remained in the Broward County Main Jail.
