Pregnant 22-Year-Old, Adriana Jimenez, Declared Brain-Dead After Canoga Park Shooting; Suspect Arrested

Adriana Jimenez, 22, who was 14 weeks pregnant, has been declared brain-dead after being shot in the head while sitting in a car with her sister in the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles on Aug. 23, according to family members.

The sisters were parked in an alley outside their apartment when a gunman opened fire, the siblings' uncle told KABC in an interview published Sept. 3. Adriana was in the driver's seat and suffered a gunshot wound to the head; her unborn child did not survive.

Maria Fernanda Jimenez, Adriana’s sister, was shot twice — including once in the neck — but the family said she is expected to recover. The family also reported that police have arrested a suspect in the case and that the person arrested is known to them. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the incident.

“The suspect is someone who is close to the family. He is known to the family. We don't understand why he made that decision,” the sisters’ uncle told KABC. “It was so tragic. I couldn't believe it.”

Adriana was already a mother to a 6-year-old daughter, who the family says is mourning and calls out for her mother. Before the shooting, Adriana had planned to celebrate her 23rd birthday and hold a gender-reveal event for her expected child on Sept. 11.

The family emphasized that, in their view, the shooting was not gang-related and asked for privacy as they grieve. The LAPD had not provided an immediate public comment when outlets sought one.

What We Know: Adriana has been declared brain-dead; her unborn child died as a result of the injuries. Her sister Maria Fernanda is expected to survive. A person reportedly known to the family was arrested, and law enforcement is investigating.
