TPUSA Booth Clash at Westfield Back-to-School Event Sparks Threats and Denials
Sophia Hunt, president of Turning Point USA's Club America chapter at Westfield High School, has received support from various conservative personalities.

Summary: A dispute at a Westfield, Ind., back-to-school event on Aug. 10 involving a TPUSA student booth has drawn national attention after 17-year-old Sophia Hunt said a mother grabbed her child away and flicked a bracelet from Hunt's hand. The mother, Kailly Stanich, denies slapping or screaming at the teen and says she firmly guided her son away. Both filed police reports and authorities sought security footage; the school said no safety incident was reported. The confrontation spread online, provoked public support for the student, and led to threats against the mother.

What happened: Sophia Hunt, 17, the president of Turning Point USA's Club America chapter at Westfield High School, told Fox News Digital that she and other students were staffing a TPUSA booth at Rock the Block — a community event hosted by Westfield Washington Schools and the Westfield Education Foundation. The students were handing out red, white and blue bracelets and explaining the group's mission, which Hunt described as promoting "God, family and country" in schools.

Hunt said a child of about 7 or 8 reached toward the table for a bracelet and that the child's mother, identified by media as Kailly Stanich, intervened and led the boy away. Hunt alleges she then asked, "Hey, are you OK?" and that Stanich responded angrily. Hunt said the mother "flicked" a bracelet out of her hand, briefly contacting her fingertips but not injuring her, and then began verbally berating students and criticizing the people and causes they support.

The mother's account: Stanich disputes key elements of Hunt's version. In a statement to media she denied ever putting her hands on a child or screaming in Hunt's face and said she firmly took her son's hand and walked away. Stanich told Newsweek she used profanity in the exchange but denied the alleged physical contact. She said she filed a police report and expected authorities to review school security footage.

Responses from the school and witnesses: Westfield Washington Schools told Fox News Digital it was "aware of concerns" and had reviewed the matter with staff and legal counsel but said no "safety incident" from Rock the Block was reported by participants or bystanders. Hunt says she reported the encounter to school administrators the next day and that other students, a faculty sponsor and nearby parents witnessed parts of the exchange. Stanich pointed to the presence of many families and public-safety booths at the event as evidence that a major altercation would have been noticed and immediately addressed.

Escalation online: Video and written accounts of Hunt's description of the encounter circulated rapidly through conservative social media networks, drawing public praise for the student from TPUSA leaders and some Republican officials. TPUSA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet and TPUSA CEO Erika Kirk posted supportive statements. Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith also praised Hunt.

Threats and fallout: Stanich says the attention led to online death threats against her and her family; she has since made portions of her social media private. Hunt strongly condemned the threats, saying no one deserves them and that harassment or violence is never justified. Both Hunt and Stanich say they filed police reports; local police were reported to be seeking event footage. The Westfield Police Department did not respond to requests for comment in the coverage cited.

Where things stand: The incident has become a partisan flashpoint in national conversation about political activity in schools and the risks of rapid online amplification. School officials say they reviewed the situation and acted within their authority but have not publicly released disciplinary or other personnel actions. Both parties maintain their accounts and law enforcement inquiries about footage were reported as ongoing.

Context: The episode highlights how a local dispute at a community event can quickly turn into a nationwide controversy when shared on social media — generating both public support and threats, and prompting involvement from school officials and law enforcement.
