Prince Harry Redirects Diana Memorial Donations To Elephant Conservation In Botswana

Prince Harry redirected nearly $7,400 from The Diana Fund to Elephants Without Borders to support elephant conservation in Botswana's Okavango Delta. The funds paid for satellite-tracking collars fitted to two elephants named for Harry and Meghan's children, Archie and Lilibet. Harry previously donated annually to Sentebale, which he co-founded, but resigned in March 2025 amid leadership disputes; Sentebale has since accused him of contributing to a toxic environment and has sued him and trustee Mark Dyer for defamation.

Prince Harry has redirected donations made to The Diana Fund — a vehicle set up to receive gifts in memory of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales — to the conservation group Elephants Without Borders to support work in Botswana's Okavango Delta.

According to Elephants Without Borders founder Dr. Mike Chase, the donation, totaling nearly $7,400, was used to fit satellite-tracking collars on two elephants in the Okavango Delta. The animals were given names honoring Harry and Meghan's children: Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

"The Duke has a very strong passion for the Okavango Delta, Botswana, its people, and its wildlife," Dr. Mike Chase told The Telegraph, calling the contribution a "tremendous honor."

The Diana Fund was created after the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund closed in 2012 to collect gifts left in Diana's memory. In 2020, proceeds from that fund were divided between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William, after Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties.

Separately, Harry has long supported Sentebale, a charity he co-founded in 2006 that provides support and holistic care to children and young people in Southern Africa, including those living with HIV/AIDS. He had been directing annual payments to Sentebale but resigned from the charity in March 2025, citing a breakdown in leadership.

Following his departure, Sentebale's chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, publicly accused the charity of fostering an environment she described as rife with abuse and alleged that Harry coordinated a campaign of bullying and harassment. A charity regulator later reported it did not find evidence of "widespread or systemic bullying, harassment, misogyny or misogynoir." Despite that finding, Sentebale has filed a defamation lawsuit against Harry and trustee Mark Dyer.

Dr. Chase said he was grateful Harry chose the Diana memorial route to support wildlife protection and noted that the funds will contribute to ongoing, on-the-ground conservation and monitoring work in a globally important elephant habitat.

Why It Matters

The donation underscores Harry's continued philanthropic focus on Southern Africa and wildlife conservation, while also arriving amid ongoing scrutiny over his ties to charities he has supported or helped found. The use of memorial donations for tangible conservation work — such as satellite tracking to protect elephants — highlights how small sums can fund high-impact conservation activities.
