The shallow 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Flores early Saturday has killed at least 51 people and displaced about 5,000 residents. Rescue teams are searching for survivors after the main shock and roughly 341 aftershocks damaged more than 900 homes and dozens of public buildings. A temporary tsunami warning prompted evacuations but was later lifted; emergency supplies and medical tents have been dispatched as landslides and damaged infrastructure complicate relief efforts.

A shallow magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Flores shortly before 05:00 local time on Saturday (22:00 GMT on Friday), killing at least 51 people and displacing roughly 5,000 residents. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors amid widespread damage, after the main shock was followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

Search-and-rescue teams have been working throughout the day to free people trapped beneath rubble. Authorities reported at least 51 fatalities across several provinces: 24 in Manggarai, 17 in East Manggarai, three in Sikka, and at least one death each in Ngada, Ende and West Manggarai. Dozens were injured — Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus Octavianus said 36 people were seriously hurt in East Nusa Tenggara province and 77 sustained minor injuries.

Damage, Displacement and Access Challenges

Preliminary assessments indicate more than 900 homes and hundreds of other buildings — including schools, health facilities and government offices — were heavily damaged. Ruteng Regional Hospital in Manggarai suffered severe structural damage, with parts of operating theatres and clinic ceilings collapsed; staff have set up temporary medical tents to treat patients. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported around 3,356 people displaced in Sikka and 2,078 evacuated in Manggarai.

Immediate Needs and Relief Efforts

The BNPB said delivering basic needs and logistics for evacuees is a top priority and that tonnes of emergency supplies have been dispatched to the worst-affected areas. Local officials and hospital spokespeople have urged faster delivery of medical equipment and personnel to support overwhelmed facilities and treat the injured.

Tsunami Warning, Aftershocks and Secondary Hazards

An initial tsunami warning prompted roughly 2,000 people to self-evacuate to higher ground; the warning was lifted about three hours later when no significant sea level rise was detected. The main quake was unusually shallow — about 15 km below the surface — and was followed by approximately 341 aftershocks. Landslides blocked access to some villages, complicating rescue and relief operations.

Eyewitnesses and Local Impact

Video from Maumere, the largest town on Flores, showed concrete slabs falling from a damaged ferry terminal and a gangway collapse that threw some passengers into the sea. Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said several victims were killed in their sleep by collapsing structures. Residents described chaotic scenes as many fled inland after reports that the sea had briefly receded.

Seismic Context

Indonesia sits at the junction of three major tectonic plates and is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. A separate magnitude 6.9 earthquake reported elsewhere in the country the same day served as a stark reminder of the region's ongoing seismic risk.

Authorities continue to urge people to stay away from coastal areas and to avoid unstable buildings while emergency teams assess damage and deliver aid.
