Scottie Crowell, a 10-month-old, was found unresponsive in a vehicle outside Owensboro Health Multicare in Madisonville, KY, after her grandmother allegedly forgot to drop her at daycare and went to work. Emergency crews and hospital staff attempted resuscitation but the infant was pronounced dead. Kentucky Child Protective Services assisted detectives, and the grandmother consented to a blood draw sent to the state lab. An autopsy has been completed; results are expected in several weeks while the case is prepared for grand jury review.

A 10-month-old infant, identified as Scottie Crowell, died after being left in a vehicle parked outside Owensboro Health Multicare in Madisonville, Kentucky, police said. The incident occurred on Thursday, Aug. 13, and authorities say the child had been in the car after her grandmother picked her up that morning.

What Happened

According to the Madisonville Police Department, Scottie’s grandmother, Dr. Stacey Fazenbaker, picked up the infant from the child’s mother that morning with the intention of dropping her at daycare before beginning a shift at the health center. Police say Fazenbaker drove to work at about 8 a.m. and unintentionally left Scottie in the vehicle in the front parking lot.

The child’s absence was discovered later that day when Scottie’s father arrived at the daycare to pick her up and learned she had never been dropped off. After contacting his wife, the mother called her own mother. "She ran outside with some co-workers to get the child," Major Jason McKnight said. By the time they reached the vehicle the infant was unresponsive.

"Officers arrived on scene, Med Center and the fire department arrived shortly after they did and they found the infant," Major Jason McKnight told local outlets. "The officers tried some lifesaving measures, but unfortunately it was too late for that."

Response And Investigation

Emergency responders and hospital staff attempted resuscitation at the scene but were unable to revive Scottie. Kentucky Child Protective Services accompanied police detectives during interviews and will continue to be involved as the investigation proceeds.

As part of routine procedure, Fazenbaker consented to a blood draw; the sample has been sent to the state laboratory. Major McKnight said investigators do not currently expect the blood test to reveal impairing substances, but results will be obtained to rule out contributing factors.

An autopsy was performed the morning following the incident; officials said the medical examiner’s report will take several weeks to complete. No charges have been filed at this time. Police said the case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is finished and additional information has been gathered.

The Madisonville Police Department and Kentucky Child Protective Services did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
