Construction workers in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium, discovered coins and gold bars worth about $10.4 million (€9 million) while demolishing a building. An 18-year-old crew member, Kobe, said they first thought the items were euro coins before realizing they'd found gold. Site manager Mario described the discovery as surreal; the team handed the haul to police. Under Belgian law the owner has five years to claim the treasure, after which it may be split between the finder and property owner if unclaimed and not tied to a crime.

Construction workers demolishing a building in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium, uncovered an astonishing stash of gold coins and bars valued at about $10.4 million (€9 million), local broadcaster VRT reported.

The crew was removing the building's foundation to lay a sewer pipe when an 18-year-old worker identified as Kobe said they initially thought the objects were euro coins before realizing they had exposed gold.

Site manager Mario described the surreal moment:

"I went to look and took the gold in my hands. We kept digging up new coins and bars as well. Only then did it really sink in what we had found. That was a crazy feeling. After 33 years in construction, it is the first time I have experienced something like this."

The crew turned the haul over to police, who have confirmed the find’s estimated value at roughly $10.4 million (about €9 million). Authorities have asked the public to stay away from the site, saying it is dangerous because the building is being completely demolished.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the discovery. If no lawful claim is made and the find is not linked to criminal activity, the treasure may be divided between the property owner and the finder.

Kobe told VRT he hopes the team will receive a finder's fee:

"Of course, we do hope we'll get a 'finder's fee.' That would be nice."

Police have secured the coins and bars and are holding them pending any claims or further investigation.
