With tips from neighbors and a coordinated law enforcement response, authorities arrested Jayson Thomas within about 30 minutes; he faces multiple charges and the investigation continues.

A routine morning jog in Middleburg, Florida, turned violent on August 11 when a 22-year-old man allegedly grabbed a woman from behind, dragged her into nearby woods and attempted to sexually assault her. The woman fought back, escaped to a nearby home and residents called 911 — leading to a rapid neighborhood search and the suspect's arrest within about 30 minutes.

What Happened

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and local reports, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. along Tynes Boulevard in the Two Creeks area. Investigators identified the suspect as 22-year-old Jayson Thomas. Sheriff Michelle Cook said the woman did not know Thomas; he allegedly seized her from behind, dragged her into a wooded area, threw her to the ground and began forcibly removing her clothing. The victim resisted, freed herself and ran to a nearby residence where occupants immediately called 911.

Swift, Coordinated Response

Deputies, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, undercover narcotics detectives and local residents who provided tips joined in the search. Authorities say Thomas fled through several backyards, changed his clothes and briefly entered an occupied house in the Pine Ridge area before running again. Law enforcement took him into custody roughly 30 minutes after the attack.

Victim Condition and Advice

The woman was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and is recovering. Sheriff Cook praised her quick, courageous actions and urged anyone facing an abduction attempt to resist if possible and do whatever it takes to get away—including screaming, kicking and biting. Cook emphasized that the victim did not go with the attacker willingly and that her resistance helped save her life.

Arrest, Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Jayson Thomas was charged with kidnapping, attempted sexual battery, burglary of an occupied residence and resisting without violence. The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court. Authorities are also investigating whether Thomas could be linked to any other incidents in the area and urged anyone with information or potential victimization to contact the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

A Moment of Levity

Body-camera footage from the arrest captured a brief, humanizing moment after the pursuit: a 60-year-old deputy who helped chase and detain Thomas jokingly told him, "You let a 60-year-old man run you down." Officials said the comment provided some levity after a frightening episode, but stressed the overall response was a serious, coordinated effort between residents and law enforcement.

Note: This account is based on official statements and local reporting. The suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
