Juan Luis Estrada, 45, allegedly carjacked a Toyota Camry at knifepoint in downtown Los Angeles, struck multiple pedestrians in hit‑and‑runs and led police on a dangerous pursuit before crashing in a McDonald’s drive‑thru. Alleged Carjacker Crashes Into McDonald's Drive‑Thru After High‑Speed Rampage; Teen Critically Injured

Juan Luis Estrada, 45, of Perris, is accused of a violent carjacking and a dangerous high‑speed rampage through Los Angeles that left a 19‑year‑old critically injured and several others struck, authorities say.
According to a press release from the Culver City Police Department, Estrada allegedly forced his way into a Toyota Camry at knifepoint in downtown Los Angeles, then struck four pedestrians in a hit‑and‑run near Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard before fleeing the scene. A second hit‑and‑run occurred nearby.
Police say officers used witness statements and license‑plate recognition technology to locate the vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the car, Estrada allegedly fled, initiating a pursuit described by police as showing an "extreme disregard for public safety" — including running red lights and repeatedly steering toward pedestrians.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed head‑on into another car inside a McDonald’s drive‑thru lane. Estrada reportedly attempted to flee on foot but was quickly arrested at the scene.
Brandon Mendez, 19, was among those struck. Speaking to ABC affiliate KABC, Mendez said he moved out of the car's path but was still hit and "launched pretty far." He estimated the vehicle was traveling about 80 mph when it struck him.
"I was hit, and I was launched pretty far," Mendez told reporters. "It's crazy how things can change in the blink of an eye."
A GoFundMe page organized by his sister, Joanna Mendez Vigil, details the severe injuries Mendez suffered after being thrown roughly 20 feet: life‑threatening injuries including internal bleeding, fractures to his spine and skull, a torn aorta and the surgical removal of his spleen.
Charges, Bail and Court Proceedings
Prosecutors have filed multiple felony charges against Estrada, including 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of carjacking, one count of evading a peace officer causing serious bodily injury, one count of battery on a peace officer and three counts of felony hit‑and‑run. He is being held on $10.25 million bail and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Court records cited by local media indicate Estrada is scheduled for a mental competency hearing to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Family members and community supporters have set up fundraising efforts to help Mendez with medical care and recovery.
