Federal officials are investigating two Salmonella outbreaks that have sickened 443 people and hospitalized 62 across 30 states. One cluster is tied to nearly 1.6 million recalled egg cartons from Midwest Poultry Services (98 illnesses, 26 hospitalizations); the larger cluster involves jalapeño peppers distributed by Coast Citrus and served at chains such as Chipotle and Qdoba (345 illnesses, 36 hospitalizations). Consumers should check recalled egg cartons, discard or return affected product, clean surfaces, and seek medical care for severe or prolonged symptoms.

Federal health officials are investigating two separate Salmonella outbreaks that together have sickened 443 people and hospitalized 62 across 30 U.S. states.

Egg-Related Outbreak

One cluster has been linked to eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services. Nearly 1.6 million cartons (about 19 million eggs) were recalled after contamination concerns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has connected the egg-related outbreak to 98 reported illnesses, including 26 hospitalizations.

Recalled cartons were sold under several retail brands in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico, including Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire's, Cal-Maine and Country Morning.

Jalapeño-Related Outbreak

The larger cluster involves jalapeño peppers served at restaurant chains including Chipotle Mexican Grill, Qdoba and other establishments. The CDC has linked 345 illnesses and 36 hospitalizations to this outbreak across 27 states. The peppers were traced to Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, which has agreed to recall the product. Minnesota and Colorado each report the highest case counts in this cluster—about 110 cases each.

Symptoms And Who’s At Risk

Salmonella commonly causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms typically begin between six hours and six days after exposure. Most healthy people recover without specific treatment, but infections can be serious or life-threatening for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Public-Health Actions And Advice

Authorities are tracing the sources and working with retailers and restaurants. If you live in one of the affected states, check egg cartons at home: do not eat eggs that match recall notices. Discard or return recalled eggs and thoroughly clean any surfaces or containers they contacted.

If you ate at restaurants later identified as affected and develop symptoms, monitor your condition closely. Seek medical attention for prolonged illness, signs of dehydration, or if you are in a higher-risk group.

Other Ongoing Outbreaks

Public-health agencies also note a separate cyclospora outbreak tied to lettuce served at Taco Bell that has now exceeded 22,000 suspected or confirmed illnesses.

Bottom line: Check recalled egg cartons, avoid the recalled jalapeños, clean kitchen surfaces, and contact a medical professional if symptoms worsen.
