Irish government jet leaves for UAE for Kinahan extradition

The Irish government has sent an Air Corps jet to the UAE to facilitate the extradition of suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan, who was arrested in Dubai on an April Irish warrant. RTÉ reports his appeals have failed and he is expected to return to Ireland on Sunday to face the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. Authorities have implemented heavy security measures and upgraded Portlaoise Prison ahead of his arrival. The US sanctioned Kinahan in April 2022, linking him and family members to the Kinahan organised crime cartel.

The Irish government has dispatched an Air Corps jet to the United Arab Emirates as part of an operation to extradite suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan, Irish broadcaster RTÉ reports. Kinahan was arrested in Dubai under an Irish court warrant issued in April and has exhausted his appeals against extradition.

Operation And Return

RTÉ reports that Kinahan is expected to be flown back to Ireland on Sunday. Upon arrival he will be taken to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin to face prosecution related to alleged leadership of an organised crime group.

Security Preparations

Real-time flight-tracking site Flightradar24 shows an Irish Air Corps aircraft approaching the UAE; it is currently one of the site's most-tracked flights. Irish authorities have put a substantial security operation in place for the transfer, and the Irish Prison Service has upgraded facilities at Portlaoise, the country’s maximum-security prison, ahead of his arrival.

Background And Allegations

The US government imposed sanctions on Kinahan in April 2022 after identifying him and family members as leaders of the Kinahan organised crime cartel. Kinahan has also been linked to the boxing world through his now-defunct management company MTK Global, which at its peak represented more than 100 fighters, including Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.

Extradition Context

An extradition agreement between the UAE and Ireland exists and was previously used to extradite Sean McGovern, described as a "senior lieutenant" in the same organised crime group. McGovern was sentenced in June to 24 years in prison for directing the activities of a criminal organisation.
