Kemi Badenoch Vows To Field “Serious Candidate” In Clacton If Farage Probe Triggers Fresh By‑Election

Kemi Badenoch has told Clacton voters the Conservatives will nominate "a serious candidate" if the parliamentary standards inquiry into Nigel Farage leads to another by‑election. Mr Farage resigned and is standing again while a probe into a £5m donation from Christopher Harborne was paused; it could resume if he is re‑elected. A suspension of more than 10 days could trigger a recall petition and another vote. Major parties have stood aside, while Reform UK urges voters to back Farage.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has written to voters in Clacton saying she will nominate "a serious candidate" to contest the coastal seat if the parliamentary standards inquiry into Nigel Farage leads to another by‑election.

Residents of Clacton in Essex go to the polls on Thursday after Mr Farage resigned as MP — a step that triggered the by‑election he is now contesting. The ballot paper contains 34 names; notably, Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens have all chosen not to stand, arguing Mr Farage's resignation is a stunt unrelated to the ongoing inquiry.

The standards probe, led by parliamentary commissioner Daniel Greenberg, is examining a £5m donation from cryptocurrency figure Christopher Harborne that Mr Farage accepted before taking his seat in the House of Commons. The investigation was paused when he resigned but is likely to resume if he is re‑elected. If the commissioner finds he broke the rules and recommends a suspension of more than 10 days, a recall petition could be triggered — potentially costing Mr Farage the seat and forcing another public vote.

In a letter "to the people of Clacton", Ms Badenoch wrote: "Nigel Farage has called this by‑election not to help you, but to help himself. Mr Farage wants the people of Clacton to settle his problems for him. He wants to point to you and say, 'even after the £5m scandal, Clacton still chose me.' The people of Clacton are entitled to ask why someone would donate Nigel Farage that kind of money." Reform has described the payment as an "unconditional gift", while Mr Farage has said it was intended to cover personal security costs.

Ms Badenoch, who represents North West Essex, added: "When the proper process has run its course and there is a genuine contest, we will be there. I will put forward a serious candidate who understands that representing Clacton is a job — someone who turns up, listens, holds meetings and works for the people who live here. When the real choice comes, the Conservatives will be there and I hope we can earn your support."

A Reform UK spokesperson accused the Conservatives of abandoning democracy by not standing, saying: "If Kemi Badenoch and the Conservatives truly had any respect for democracy they would have stood a candidate in this by‑election. The truth is that the Tories have turned their backs on the people of Clacton... Voters here have the chance to send a resounding message by voting for Nigel Farage and Reform next Thursday."

Notable challengers include Count Binface, actor‑turned‑politician Laurence Fox, and three candidates from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party — Nick The Incredible Flying Brick, leader Alan "Howling Laud" Hope and Baron Von Thunderclap. The long list of names has drawn attention to the unusual scale of the ballot in what is already a high‑profile contest.

The Clacton constituency covers Clacton‑on‑Sea, Frinton‑on‑Sea and Walton‑on‑the‑Naze, along with inland villages such as Frating, Tendring, Wix and Little Oakley. Whichever way the vote goes, the outcome will determine whether Mr Farage returns to Parliament while the standards matter remains unresolved and whether the inquiry — and any subsequent recall process — will continue.
