AFP analysis: A viral video claiming Asad Mehmood apologised for his father, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, is manipulated. The footage matches a Nov. 30, 2024 party post and the audio scored 1/100 on a voice-cloning detector, assessed as "likely a deepfake." Rehman's July 12, 2026 Kasur remarks prompted official condemnation, but there is no verified apology from his son.

A viral clip purporting to show Asad Mehmood — son of influential Islamist leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman — apologising for his father's July 12, 2026 remarks about Pakistan's military is manipulated. A forensic review shows the footage was repurposed from an earlier party post and the audio is likely a synthetic insertion.

Key findings:

Original Footage Predates Controversy. A reverse-image search of keyframes links the circulating video to a recording posted by Jamiat-e-Ulama Islami (F) on its official X account on November 30, 2024. In that original clip, Asad Mehmood is speaking to reporters in Chichawatni and discusses local election campaigning and incidents of violence during the 2024 general election; he does not mention his father.

Audio Appears Manipulated. Audio analysis comparing the party's X video and the viral clip shows noticeable differences in voice characteristics. The Hiya voice-cloning detection tool, used via a verification plugin, returned an authenticity score of 1/100 and assessed the audio as "likely a deepfake." Reviewers therefore conclude the vocal track in the viral post was probably altered or replaced.

No Evidence Of A Public Apology. Despite social posts claiming Asad Mehmood apologised for Rehman — including an Urdu-language Facebook post that circulated on July 16, 2026 — there are no verified reports, official statements, or reliable records confirming his apology. AFP contacted Jamiat-e-Ulama Islami (F) for comment but received no response.

Context Of Rehman's Remarks. Maulana Fazlur Rehman's July 12 rally in Kasur included remarks that critics said suggested soldiers were willing to risk their lives because of their pay. Those comments drew condemnation from several officials, mainly from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N), and generated the social-media posts that repurposed the older video.

"Big News: Diesel's own son has distanced himself from his father because of Diesel's nonsense," read one Urdu Facebook post that recycled the manipulated clip — invoking Rehman's longtime nickname, "Maulana Diesel," used by critics for his former role as petroleum minister.

Verification Steps Taken. Reporters verified the origin of the footage with reverse-image and keyframe searches, compared the original and viral clips frame-by-frame, and ran the audio through an AI-detection tool. AFP also captured a screenshot showing verification labels added to the false post.

Bottom Line: The viral video is a manipulated repurposing of a November 2024 party recording. The audio is likely a deepfake, and there is no verifiable evidence that Asad Mehmood apologised publicly on behalf of his father for the July 2026 remarks.
