Officials report that the Bradley Creek wildfire destroyed about 230 homes on the Okanagan Indian Band reserve near Vernon, B.C., one of Canada’s most destructive recent fires. Fierce winds estimated at up to 115 km/h (71 mph) drove the blaze so quickly that some residents had only minutes to escape. Aerial crews protected key buildings, while roughly 8,000 people were evacuated across the province amid dozens of active fires and changing evacuation orders.
Bradley Creek Wildfire Destroys About 230 Homes On Okanagan Reserve Near Vernon, B.C.

Officials said Tuesday that a fast-moving Bradley Creek wildfire destroyed roughly 230 homes on the Okanagan Indian Band reserve near Vernon, British Columbia, making it one of Canada’s most destructive recent blazes.
Widespread Damage and Rapid Evacuations
Dan Wilson, chief of the Okanagan Indian Band, surveyed the devastation by helicopter and said the scene was almost unrecognizable. 'It was hard to recognize my community from the air with all the structures and the forest gone,' he said.
'The fire spread so fast that some of our members only had five minutes to evacuate,' Wilson added.
The Bradley Creek fire erupted late Friday and was driven by wind gusts estimated at up to 115 kilometers per hour (about 71 mph), which helped carry flames through the reserve in minutes. Aerial firefighting crews repeatedly dropped water on key sites and helped protect critical infrastructure, including a daycare and a newly built school.
Human Stories
Residents who fled described harrowing escapes. Louis Fred said he has lived in the area all his life and had never seen winds like this: 'Even 2021 was bad. It was huge. But the wind wasn't nothing like compared to this one.' He and Shorty Fred escaped with flames close behind them.
Regional Impact
Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene said about 8,000 people have been evacuated across British Columbia. As of Tuesday there were 37 evacuation orders in effect, with conditions changing by the hour.
The BC Wildfire Service reported roughly 120 wildfires burning across the province, about 50 of them out of control. In addition to Bradley Creek, major fires were burning near Boston Bar, Clinton and Kimberley.
This disaster ranks alongside other recent destructive Canadian wildfires: a 2024 blaze in Jasper, Alberta, destroyed about 350 homes, while the 2023 McDougall Creek fire in the Okanagan region destroyed roughly 200 homes. Canada has experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years, with smoke repeatedly drifting across North America and prompting widespread air-quality warnings.
Ongoing Response
Local leaders and emergency services continue to assess damage and support displaced families. Recovery and rebuilding will be a long process for the Okanagan Indian Band as officials work to account for residents and coordinate relief resources.
