The FDA on July 31 expanded a recall of two Eridanous Shortbread Cookie varieties sold at Lidl after finding that packaging failed to declare wheat, soy, milk, egg and tree nut (coconut) allergens in English. The cookies were sold at Lidl stores across nine states and the District of Columbia between July 16 and July 29. Consumers with relevant allergies should not eat the products and may return them for a full refund without a receipt; no illnesses have been reported to date.

On July 31, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded a recall of two Eridanous Shortbread Cookie varieties sold at Lidl after finding that packaging failed to declare wheat, soy, milk, egg and tree nut (coconut) allergens in English.

Lidl initially announced a recall on July 24 after discovering that some boxes carried foreign-language labeling that omitted critical allergen declarations and did not include nutrition facts or ingredient lists in English. The recalled products were distributed to Lidl stores in nine U.S. states and the District of Columbia between July 16 and July 29.

Affected Products

  • Eridanous Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Truffle Coating & Apricot Filling — 11.6 oz (330 g) box (UPC: 4056489125839)
  • Eridanous Shortbread Cookies with Apricot Filling and Cocoa Topping with Coconut Sprinkles — 11.6 oz (330 g) box (UPC: 4056489125846)

Lidl expanded the recall after a supplier distribution records review indicated additional units of the coconut-sprinkle variety may share the same English-language labeling omissions.

Where They Were Sold

The products were distributed to Lidl locations in the following jurisdictions: Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Possible Allergic Reactions

Although the FDA reports no illnesses linked to these products so far, anyone with an allergy or sensitivity to wheat, soy, milk, egg or tree nuts (coconut) could experience reactions that range from mild to life-threatening. Watch for:

  • Gastrointestinal: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (occasionally with blood)
  • Oral and Skin: tingling or itching of the mouth, hives, itchy rash, swelling of skin
  • Respiratory: nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Systemic/Severe Signs: dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, fast or slow heartbeat, swelling of the lips/tongue/throat, anaphylaxis
  • Infants: colic or unusual crying may indicate a reaction

What To Do

Do not eat the recalled cookies. You may discard them or return the product to any Lidl store for a full refund — a receipt is not required. For questions, contact Lidl U.S. Customer Care at (844) 747-5435, Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. ET.

If you have already eaten the cookies, monitor yourself (or your child) for symptoms. Contact your healthcare provider if you feel unwell. Seek emergency care or call 911 immediately for severe signs such as difficulty breathing, throat swelling, fainting, or a changing heartbeat.
