Sir Ian Wood, who has died aged 84, built John Wood & Son into the global Wood Group and later directed much of his wealth into philanthropy and regional development. He championed safety after the Piper Alpha disaster, led the company’s expansion and public listing, and funded education and economic-transition projects in Scotland and East Africa. His giving in the Aberdeen area exceeded £100 million, and his estimated fortune was about £1.9 billion.

Sir Ian Clark Wood, who has died aged 84, turned his family's Aberdeen marine-engineering concern into the global Wood Group and devoted much of his wealth to philanthropy and regional economic planning. A shrewd operator who recognised the opportunities of North Sea oil, he helped make Aberdeen a European energy hub while later championing a transition to low-carbon industries.

Career And The Rise Of Wood Group

Born in Aberdeen on 21 July 1942, Ian Wood joined the family firm in 1964 and became managing director of John Wood & Son in 1967. The company, already active in fishing and ship repair, was repositioned to serve multinational oil companies after the discovery of North Sea fields such as Montrose (1969), Forties and Brent.

Under his leadership the Wood Group expanded beyond the North Sea into North and South America and the Middle East, reaching roughly $1 billion in annual revenue by the turn of the century. The business was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2002 with an initial market valuation of £935 million and joined the FTSE 100 in 2008. Ian Wood remained chief executive until 2006 and chairman until 2012.

Safety, Loss And Responsibility

The Piper Alpha disaster of July 1988 — which claimed 167 lives in total and included 39 Wood employees — had a profound effect on company culture. Wood emphasised safety and operational discipline, priorities that shaped the group's reputation in engineering and client service.

Philanthropy And Regional Leadership

Having sold down family holdings after the public listing, Sir Ian channelled significant resources into philanthropy. The Wood Family Foundation, established in 2007, focused on opportunities for young people in Scotland and development projects in sub-Saharan Africa, notably in the tea sectors of Rwanda and Tanzania. Local giving in and around Aberdeen has been estimated at more than £100 million and funded projects including an Oil and Gas Institute at Robert Gordon University and a multi-storey car park for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

As a public advocate for economic planning beyond oil, Wood founded and principally funded Aberdeen's Energy Transition Zone to help protect and create regional jobs in low-carbon and renewable sectors.

Public Service, Honours And Later Years

Ian Wood served as a director of the Royal Bank of Scotland from 1988 to 1997 and was a familiar figure on regional business committees for decades. He was Chancellor of Robert Gordon University from 2005 to 2021. His honours included CBE (1982), knighthood (1994), promotion to GBE (2016) and appointment as a Knight of the Thistle (2018).

“What he did for Aberdeen no one else has ever done and I suspect no one else ever will,” said financier Martin Gilbert, reflecting on Wood’s impact on the city and region.

Personal Life And Legacy

Ian Wood married Helen Macrae in 1970. He is survived by his wife and their three sons, Garreth, Nicholas and Graham. Despite his wealth — latterly estimated at around £1.9 billion — Wood was widely described as unpretentious and approachable, with modest tastes and a strong attachment to family and local community.

Following a series of later corporate challenges to the engineering business and its eventual sale earlier this year to the Dubai-based conglomerate Sidara, Wood’s lasting legacy remains as much civic and philanthropic as commercial: a transformed Aberdeen, major charitable investments and a public campaign for a sustainable post‑oil economy.
