A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck near Quarto in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area west of Naples at 7:46 p.m. local time. The quake, about 3.1 miles (5 km) deep, injured at least 26 people and caused several uninhabited buildings to collapse. Authorities reported landslides and strong shaking near the epicenter, and emergency teams are assessing damage.

The tremor occurred at 1:46 p.m. ET (7:46 p.m. local time). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake's epicenter was about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Quarto and the focal depth was roughly 3.1 miles (5 km) beneath the surface.

Casualties And Damage

Italy's Civil Protection Department said several uninhabited buildings collapsed. At least 26 people were reported injured — 21 in Pozzuoli and five in Giugliano — according to local authorities. Multiple landslides and rockslides were also reported around the epicentral area, adding to damage on slopes and roads.

Shaking And Local Context

Strong shaking was reported in communities closest to the epicenter. The quake happened in the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields), an active volcanic caldera west of Naples that is continuously monitored by the Vesuvius Observatory for seismic and volcanic activity.
