The scooter rider in Mount Vernon, New York, narrowly avoided being struck when a vacant three-story building at 16 North Bond Street collapsed while crews were reinforcing it. Viral surveillance footage shared by ABC News 7 New York shows the close call; two parked SUVs were crushed under the debris. Adjacent buildings were evacuated and later cleared after initial checks, and city officials are conducting comprehensive structural assessments. No confirmed injuries have been reported so far.

A man riding a scooter in Mount Vernon, New York, escaped serious injury by mere inches after a vacant three-story building at 16 North Bond Street suddenly collapsed while undergoing reinforcement work. Surveillance video shared by ABC News 7 New York shows the rider passing the site moments before a section of the structure gave way and fell onto the street.

The footage suggests that had he been only a second slower he could have been struck by falling debris. Two parked SUVs were crushed under the rubble, and dust and debris engulfed the block as bystanders rushed toward the scene. The scooter rider later returned to the site, visibly shaken but unharmed, to see how close he had come to disaster.

Immediate Aftermath

Local reports from Fox 5 New York described the collapse as a total structural failure of the vacant property. Authorities evacuated two adjoining apartment buildings at 14 and 18 North Bond Street as a precaution; after initial inspections, residents were later allowed to reenter. City crews temporarily disconnected power to the area and closed North Bond Street between Oak Street and Mount Vernon Avenue while emergency and construction teams worked.

Officials' Response

"We are conducting comprehensive interior and exterior structural assessments, including evaluations of the adjoining buildings and roofing systems, to determine when it will be safe for residents to reoccupy the neighboring properties," city officials said.

Mount Vernon officials said the collapse occurred during an approved project in which construction crews were reinforcing the building to improve its stability. Investigators and structural engineers were dispatched to assess the cause of the failure and to determine the condition of neighboring structures.

As of the latest reports, there are no confirmed injuries to construction workers, pedestrians, or nearby residents. The crushed SUVs and rapid evacuations underscore how suddenly a reinforcement project can turn dangerous when a structure fails. The scooter rider's quick reflexes and steady pace likely helped him avoid a far worse outcome.

What’s next: Officials will continue detailed structural evaluations and will release updates when adjacent buildings are deemed safe for reoccupation. Investigations into the collapse’s cause are ongoing.
