The mid‑June 14‑point deal meant to defuse U.S.‑Iran tensions has collapsed, and fighting has resumed and spread across the region. Attacks have reached Egypt’s Damietta port, U.S. forces and interests in Jordan, and prompted Saudi military action alongside CENTCOM. Concerns are growing about outside support for Tehran and the possibility that the Iran conflict could intersect with other wars, notably in Ukraine.

The 14-point agreement with Iran signed by President Donald Trump in mid-June was presented as a diplomatic off-ramp meant to de‑escalate hostilities and open new avenues for stability in the Middle East. But six weeks after the accord was finalized — and three weeks after Mr. Trump publicly declared it void — the confrontation has not only resumed but broadened into new theatres and reignited long‑standing regional rivalries.

Damietta Strike Expands the Front

On Wednesday, flames engulfed an American‑owned gas storage tanker and a second vessel at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta. Egyptian authorities said a drone caused the blaze. Tehran’s foreign minister denied responsibility and no group has claimed the strike, but U.S. officials assessed that actors linked to Iran were likely involved. President Trump described the incident as "a little more of the same," and Egyptian and U.S. envoys emphasized the need to avoid further escalation.

Saudi Arabia Steps In

U.S. officials say Tehran helped undermine a long‑running informal truce between Riyadh and Iran‑backed Houthi forces by attempting to fly Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel and weapons into Yemen’s capital earlier this month. Saudi‑backed forces fired on the aircraft to prevent it landing; the plane diverted and the Houthis then announced plans to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi ports, threatening a key shipping lane.

Riyadh, long reluctant to escalate, announced it had taken a direct military role: Saudi forces carried out strikes in coordination with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) against Iraqi targets accused of attacking Saudi energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia also convened representatives from 43 countries to discuss a maritime defence coalition to protect Red Sea shipping; 14 nations endorsed a joint statement launching the proposed coalition.

Attacks on U.S. Forces and Broader Risks

Exactly one month after the now‑defunct deal was signed, a missile and drone barrage that U.S. officials attributed to Tehran killed three American service members — the first U.S. combat fatalities from direct Iranian fire in this phase of the conflict. Tehran has also struck U.S. interests in Jordan repeatedly over the past month, extending the reach of its campaign well beyond the Gulf.

Following a brief lull that U.S. officials had hoped would open space for diplomacy, CENTCOM described a subsequent Iranian operation as an "attempted surprise attack" on American forces; Iranian authorities later identified Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base as the intended target. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War assessed the activity as a signal of Tehran’s willingness to risk full‑scale confrontation with the United States.

Questions About Outside Support And Widening Conflicts

Tehran’s expanded focus on targets far from Iran has intensified scrutiny of whether it is receiving intelligence, logistics, or other support from rival powers such as Russia or China. U.S. officials continue to say Moscow and Beijing have not materially bolstered Iran’s campaign. Separately, Ukraine struck an Iranian commercial cargo ship in the Caspian Sea that Kyiv said was carrying arms between Iran and Russia; the incident prompted threats of Iranian retaliation and raised concerns that the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East could begin to intersect.

Outlook: With mediation efforts repeatedly stalling, the fighting shows signs of diffusion across the region. That increases the risk of miscalculation and a wider regional conflagration unless renewed, sustained diplomacy can be secured.
