Body of Scottish Woman Found Inside Suitcase in Athens Sparks Multi-Agency Inquiry

The body of a Scottish woman was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens last month, triggering a multi-agency investigation involving Greek authorities, Police Scotland and Interpol.
State broadcaster ERT has identified the deceased as 38-year-old Elisabeth-Jane Ross, who is reported to have travelled to Greece from Cyprus shortly before her death. A homeless man is said to have found the body, and Greek police estimate she had been dead for around five to seven days before being located.
Greek investigators told BBC Scotland that fingerprints checked via Interpol matched records for a woman born in 1988. Officials said the cause of death has not yet been determined and that they are awaiting toxicology and autopsy results from the medical examiner.
Local police have requested further information from British authorities about Ms Ross’s arrival in Greece, including when she arrived and with whom. A police spokesperson said:
“Further details have been requested regarding when she arrived in Greece, how, and with whom. We cannot provide further details at this stage, as the investigation is fully under way.”
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is providing consular support and is in contact with local authorities. Police Scotland also said it is liaising with Greek investigators and providing support to the family in Scotland.
Investigation Continues
Greek police and international partners continue to examine the circumstances of Ms Ross’s death. Authorities have appealed for anyone with information about her movements or contacts in Greece to come forward to assist the inquiry.
