Veteran Reporter Calls Mitch McConnell 'Cranky and Pugnacious' as Questions Mount During 43-Day Absence
Longtime Reporter Says Mitch McConnell ‘Is Just Being a Little Cranky and Pugnacious’ Amid Lengthy Absence

Longtime Kentucky reporter Al Cross told CNN that Sen. Mitch McConnell's prolonged, 43-day absence appears driven more by the senator's private, independent style than by any clear, communicated medical explanation. Cross called McConnell "cranky and pugnacious" and said a brief personal statement or video could ease much of the speculation. Gov. Andy Beshear has pressed for more proof but has limited options while the seat remains occupied. McConnell's office has released two photos with Elaine Chao and otherwise offered few details.

Longtime Kentucky journalist Al Cross offered a blunt assessment of Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) lengthy absence from the Senate, saying the 84-year-old senator's privacy and stubbornness better explain his silence than any public medical update. McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home on June 14 and has not returned to work since, prompting growing public concern and repeated calls from Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) for clearer proof of the senator's condition.

Al Cross on McConnell: Speaking with CNN's Kasie Hunt, Cross described McConnell as fiercely independent and deliberately private about his health. "He cherishes his independence, and he could easily resolve this matter, but you know, he's just being a little cranky and pugnacious here in the twilight of his career," Cross said.

"I'm going to do it the way I want to do it. And he's often done that. He's always been pretty private about his health and so on. So it's not really a big surprise. You know, I wish he would give us a short video and put all this misinformation to rest, but he's going out the way he wants to go out. I guess you got to give him a little grace for that."

Gov. Beshear's Response: Cross also discussed Gov. Andy Beshear's public pressure for more transparency. Beshear has urged McConnell to provide clearer proof of his wellbeing, but Cross noted the governor's options are limited while the Senate seat remains occupied. "It would be silly to try to appoint somebody to a seat that's not vacant," Cross observed, adding that Beshear is balancing political pressure and his broader ambitions.

Silence and Limited Evidence: McConnell's office has released only two photos showing the senator with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, as a basic confirmation of life. Few other details have been provided, and unverified speculation — including bizarre claims circulating online — has not been substantiated by officials. Cross argued there are "hardly any consequences" for McConnell in staying largely silent, which may explain the prolonged absence.

What This Means: The episode highlights tensions between public expectation for transparency from senior elected officials and an individual's right to privacy about health matters. For now, questions remain about McConnell's timeline for returning to work and whether his office will offer more than the limited information provided to date.
