Sofia Ann-Buitron Drotts, a 26-year-old former behavioral health clinician from San Francisco, has been indicted by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office on multiple felony counts after authorities say she engaged in a sexual relationship with a teenage client, officials announced Wednesday.
Drotts worked at the John Davis Juvenile Detention Center in Martinez, where the teenage boy — identified in court filings only as John Doe — had been assigned to her as a client. Prosecutors say the alleged sexual relationship began after the juvenile was released from detention and continued from April 1 through July 14 of this year.
The indictment filed in Contra Costa County Superior Court lists several counts related to the alleged conduct, including two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, two counts of oral copulation with a minor under 18, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object, two counts of transmitting harmful material to a minor, and one count of possession of child or youth pornography. Local news reports vary on the total number of charges; court documents describe the specific counts above.
Concord Police detectives say the matter was brought to their attention by a Probation Department supervisor in Contra Costa County, prompting a follow-up investigation. Drotts was arrested on July 14 and referred to the district attorney's office about a week later for prosecution.
Her arraignment will be scheduled in Contra Costa County Superior Court, where the charges will be formally read and she will be informed of the allegations. If Drotts pleads not guilty, the case would proceed to a preliminary hearing, where a judge will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to send the case to trial.
Note: The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The identity of the juvenile victim is being withheld by the court to protect his privacy.
