Ibeh Chika Simon, 42, collapsed during a police arrest operation in Cape Town and was later declared dead. A post-mortem found multiple bruises and abrasions on his back and chest, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has opened an inquiry. Nigerian officials have called for a transparent investigation amid growing diplomatic tensions over alleged attacks on foreign nationals. The case is part of a wider regional concern involving Nigeria, Ghana and Ecowas.

South African authorities are investigating the death of 42-year-old Nigerian national Ibeh Chika Simon, who collapsed as officers moved to arrest him during a police operation in Cape Town last week.

What Happened

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said initial post-mortem results showed Simon sustained multiple bruises and abrasions on his back and chest. Western Cape police said officers found an unlicensed firearm and what appeared to be drugs while searching a home. As they moved to place Simon under arrest, police said he became unwell and collapsed; paramedics were called and he was declared deceased at the scene.

Official Reactions

Nigerian officials have strongly condemned the circumstances surrounding Simon's death. Nigeria's consul general in Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, described the reports as "deeply appalling" and called for a transparent, independent investigation, saying the case fits an alarming pattern of unresolved extrajudicial deaths and alleged misconduct against foreign nationals.

"Suspects are entitled to due process in a court of law; no authority should be above it," Okey-Uche said.

Western Cape police spokesperson Col Andre Traut said officers were conducting a search when they discovered the items and moved to effect an arrest. The force has denied records of a separate claim that another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, was shot during the same operation; Nigerian diplomats say Chuks was hospitalised with serious injuries.

Wider Context And Ongoing Probes

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between South Africa and several West African states, particularly Nigeria and Ghana, following recent anti-migrant unrest and similar deaths. Ipid is investigating Simon's death and has also been probing a reported June death of another Nigerian, Emeka Charles Iroegbu, under comparable circumstances.

Regional bodies and foreign governments — including the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) — have urged South African authorities to protect foreign nationals and conduct prompt, transparent inquiries. Two Ghanaian nationals have petitioned the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged attacks on migrants; South Africa has rejected the petition as "opportunistic," saying domestic courts can address the claims.

Next Steps

The Ipid inquiry will examine the cause of death and whether police conduct conformed with law and procedure. Nigeria has demanded a full investigation and has signalled it may pursue diplomatic or legal avenues depending on the findings. South Africa's Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration and justice officials say they are monitoring the case as investigations continue.

Note: All investigations are ongoing and claims remain subject to verification by independent authorities.
