The U.S. announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, and joint U.S.-Israeli strikes have been followed by continued exchanges of force. In June, U.S. and Iranian delegations began negotiations based on a memorandum of understanding, though tensions persist. Oman and Iran held "fruitful" talks in Tehran on mechanisms to keep shipping safe in the Strait of Hormuz while respecting coastal sovereignty. The Pentagon confirmed the identity of Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad, killed July 17 in Jordan; he and three other service members received posthumous promotions.

The region remains tense as diplomacy and military actions continue to unfold around the Strait of Hormuz. On Feb. 28, President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran, describing large-scale joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on military, government and infrastructure targets. Despite subsequent diplomatic engagements, exchanges of strikes have persisted and the strategic waterway remains the primary flashpoint.
In June, delegations from the United States and Iran entered negotiations aimed at producing a war-ending agreement built on a memorandum of understanding both sides had signed earlier. Those talks have continued alongside other diplomatic approaches, but so far have not halted all hostilities.
The Israel Defense Forces said on Monday it intercepted "two unmanned aircraft identified in the Jordan border airspace." The IDF added that "the aircraft did not cross into the country's territory; the launch origin is under investigation," in a post to X. Authorities in the region are continuing to probe the incident and its origin.
Oman-Iran Talks
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei described an Omani diplomatic delegation's visit to Tehran on Friday and Saturday as "fruitful, and some progress was made." According to Baghaei, the two sides "exchanged views on common principles and operational mechanisms for managing safe shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal states." He added that the Omani delegation left Tehran Saturday evening but that technical and political consultations were continuing.

Pentagon Confirmation
The Pentagon announced that the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System has officially confirmed the remains of Staff Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York. Rampersad was believed to have been killed in action on July 17, 2026, during an enemy attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. The Pentagon also said the three other U.S. service members killed in last week's strikes received posthumous promotions.
These developments illustrate a volatile mix of military escalation and parallel diplomatic efforts: officials are pursuing negotiations and confidence-building measures even as investigations and defensive operations continue in the Gulf and surrounding regions.
