Hunter Biden, 56, has re-emerged on social media and in interviews, framing his appearances as advocacy for people recovering from addiction while also issuing hints of political ambition. His book and past op-eds aside, his recent media choices — including interviews with polarizing figures — have drawn criticism and raised questions about judgment. Convicted in 2024 on federal gun and tax-related charges and later pardoned by his father, Biden's public comeback risks bringing added scrutiny to the Biden family. The columnist suggests Biden focus on private pursuits, such as painting, rather than pursue a political path.

In May, Hunter Biden, 56, reappeared on X with a blunt line:

I'm Hunter Biden. You've never actually heard from me.
That claim understates his public record — he published a 2021 memoir and wrote a 2023 op-ed — but it marked the start of a prominent media push that he frames as advocacy for people battling addiction.

Biden has been open about years of substance abuse, multiple rehab stints and, he says, seven years of sobriety. He maintains his recent interviews and appearances are intended to support others struggling with addiction.

Is There A Political Angle?

Alongside the recovery narrative, many observers see political signaling. Profiles describe his return as a kind of "will-he-or-won't-he" moment, and Biden himself has dropped teasing remarks. On California Gov. Gavin Newsom's podcast in June — after Newsom joked that he was a "2028 presidential candidate" — Biden quipped, "I'll run, but only as your VP, because the truth of the matter is the vice president's residence is a lot cooler. It's a lot easier job, too." Media outlets largely presented the comment as a joke, but it was among several flirtations with the idea of running for office.

At a June press conference, former President Donald Trump responded to the notion of Hunter running in 2028 by saying, "You would think that the past has something to do with winning an election. And I would say his past is not the greatest." Both Trump and Hunter have faced legal troubles; Hunter was convicted in 2024 on federal gun and tax-related charges and was later pardoned by President Joe Biden before sentencing in late 2024.

Controversial Interview Partners

Some of Hunter Biden's media choices have provoked particular concern. His first major interview this spring was with conservative commentator Candace Owens — who had been a harsh critic in the past — and the two spent nearly two hours trading anecdotes and bonding over shared faith. More recently, Biden filmed with Channel 5's Andrew Callaghan and sat for an interview that included Nick Fuentes, a far-right commentator widely criticized for espousing white-nationalist sentiments. Those pairings have sparked outcry from critics who say they amplify extremist figures and risk normalizing fringe voices.

What This Means For The Biden Family

Public reaction suggests many Americans, including some Democrats, are weary of continued Biden-family visibility. Earlier in 2025, Jill Biden published a memoir that revisited President Joe Biden's health and the missteps of the June 2024 debate against Trump — a moment widely seen as damaging to his political standing. Joe Biden also has a book scheduled for release shortly after the midterms, keeping the family in the public eye.

Biden's renewed prominence — especially given his 2024 convictions and the laptop revelations that raised questions about past international business dealings — may increase scrutiny of the family at a politically sensitive time. Whether the pardon has altered his public appeal or perceived viability remains a key question.

A Personal Note From The Columnist

The columnist argues that Hunter's publicity strategy risks becoming a distraction for Democrats and may be counterproductive for his own rehabilitation. The suggestion: lean into private pursuits like painting rather than courting controversy in the public sphere.
