Seven decades after the 1950–53 Korean War, North and South Korea remain separated by one of the world's most heavily armed borders. The DMZ and its surrounding defenses, memorials and museums preserve the memory of conflict, while separated families and survivors continue to bear its human cost. The armistice signed on July 27, 1953 halted fighting but did not produce a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula technically still at war.

Seoul, South Korea — Seven decades after the fighting on the Korean Peninsula began, North and South Korea remain divided by one of the world's most heavily militarized frontiers. The fortified boundary is a stark reminder that the 1950–53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the two states technically still at war.

A Conflict That Never Fully Ended

Although active combat ceased with the July 27, 1953 armistice, the physical and emotional traces of the war persist. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and adjacent buffer areas are lined with fortifications, watchtowers and minefields, and memorials stand in towns across both Koreas commemorating lives lost.

Human Cost and Memory

Beneath the visible defenses lies a quieter, enduring toll: families separated for generations, aging survivors who carry traumatic memories, and communities shaped by loss and longing. Periodic reunions and humanitarian efforts underscore the human urgency behind diplomatic stalemate.

Why It Matters: The boundary is not just a line on a map — it is a living reminder of an unresolved conflict and the importance of remembering history so its lessons are passed to new generations.

This photo gallery, curated by AP photo editors, highlights both the stark military infrastructure along the border and the personal stories that continue to shape Korean life seven decades after the armistice.
