What Happened

Investigators identify the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove. According to law enforcement sources, footage from the June 16 broadcast shows Truelove loitering outside Rockefeller Center while Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin were on air. Minutes later, he reportedly bypassed studio security, entered Studio 1A and confronted Melvin. Authorities say Truelove initially sought Al Roker; when he could not find him, he allegedly directed racist slurs at Melvin.

Charges And Background

Truelove now faces multiple charges, including hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment. Court records and reporting indicate he has prior arrests and a previous felony conviction in New York. In a prior case he pleaded guilty to felony criminal mischief and received six months in jail, five years of probation and a $500 fine. Additional charges in New York — including assault, reckless endangerment and trespassing — are reported as pending.

Security Review And Staffing Changes

The incident prompted an internal and law-enforcement review of studio security. Investigators reviewed surveillance video that reportedly shows two security officers at the studio entrance shortly before the breach; one officer left his post and the other did not stop the individual from entering. A longtime security guard at Studio 1A has been dismissed following the review. NBC says it is coordinating with law enforcement to strengthen security across its facilities.

On the June 17 broadcast, Melvin told viewers that everyone on site was safe and thanked police for their quick response. Protective Orders: During Truelove's arraignment on July 17, Melvin and Roker obtained temporary restraining orders requiring the defendant to keep a court-ordered distance from both anchors while the case proceeds.
