Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), 74, has become a viral social media figure thanks to candid, folksy TikTok and Instagram videos. His June 17 backyard clip topped 1 million views and helped push his TikTok likes to roughly 4.8 million while he maintains about 1.3 million Instagram followers. Media experts say his unfiltered style builds parasocial connections that can expand his political reach—an advantage if he ever considers higher office. Kennedy also wrote a No. 1 New York Times bestselling book and continues to emphasize his focus on the midterms and his Senate reelection.

Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, 74, has quietly become one of Washington's most surprising social media successes. What began as short, self-deprecating clips — including a June 17 backyard tour that topped 1 million TikTok views — has turned the junior senator into the most-followed Republican in the Senate on TikTok and a viral figure across platforms.

Viral Moments and Metrics

Kennedy's June backyard video, in which he jokingly warns viewers they might step in "dog poo," drew more than 1 million views and helped drive nearly 750,000 engagements across his posts. He has amassed roughly 4.8 million likes on TikTok and about 1.3 million followers on Instagram, where his short, candid clips also frequently go viral.

Style and Signature Clips

Kennedy's content is built on folksy, off-color humor and apparent authenticity. Popular moments include a clip introducing his dog Charlie, a muscular former stray who earned about 235,000 likes, and a widely shared video in which Kennedy shared his wife Becky's "not-so-world-famous" chicken salad recipe (one clip has about 3 million views).

"This is another one of those silly videos my staff told me I needed to make," Kennedy said in one clip, adding, "I don't know why on God's green Earth anybody should care."

Political Context

Observers say Kennedy's online persona may have political value. His visibility on platforms popular with younger audiences positions him differently from many Senate Republicans, who largely avoided TikTok amid security concerns over its Chinese ownership. Kennedy has been discussed as a potential national contender in the long term, though he tells interviewers his current focus is on midterms and his Senate reelection.

His October book, How to Test Negative for Stupid: And Why Washington Never Will, reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, further amplifying his profile.

How Scholars Explain the Appeal

Media scholars point to perceived authenticity and parasocial connection — the sense that viewers personally know a public figure — as reasons for Kennedy's online traction. April Eichmeier, a professor of emerging media, said this sort of "backyard, folksy" persona used to appear only in weekend magazines; now it reaches audiences instantly. Scott Dunn, a political communication professor, notes social platforms let politicians cultivate one-sided intimacy with followers, which can translate into attention for their politics.

Broader Senate Social Media Landscape

Kennedy outpaces most Senate Republicans on TikTok. By comparison, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) is the nation's most-followed senator on TikTok with about 1.7 million followers. Among Senate Republicans, Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) has a verified account with fewer than 300 followers and no posted videos, while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is approaching 24,000 followers.

Background

Kennedy served five terms as Louisiana state treasurer beginning in 1999. He switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in August 2007. After two failed Senate bids, he won election to the U.S. Senate in 2016 and was reelected in 2022 by a large margin.

Why It Matters: Whether Kennedy's social media success translates into broader political influence remains uncertain, but his ability to reach large, engaged audiences on TikTok and Instagram is an unusual — and increasingly important — asset for a sitting senator.
