Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao returned to the United States this week after a long‑planned trip to China that overlapped with her husband Senator Mitch McConnell's hospitalization on June 14.
Timeline And Context
Chao departed for China on June 12, two days before McConnell was admitted to the hospital. Local outlets report she was photographed on June 17 sitting beside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing. Her visit, Chao's office says, was focused on family philanthropic activities and included meetings with a number of people, among them the U.S. ambassador to China.
Statement From Chao's Office
"The secretary was on a long‑planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors. During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.," a spokesperson for Chao told The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Her travel prompted unfounded conspiracy theories on social media; Chao's staff pushed back on those claims and said the visit did not require an abrupt return. The office has not confirmed whether Chao was in direct contact with McConnell during the trip or immediately after her return, according to the CBS affiliate WLKY in Louisville.
Background On McConnell's Health
Senator Mitch McConnell, 83, the seven‑term senator from Kentucky and long‑time Republican leader, has had multiple health‑related news items this year. He previously checked into a hospital on Feb. 2 after experiencing flu‑like symptoms. McConnell announced last year he will not seek reelection and plans to retire after his current term.
Amid the broader media attention surrounding the senator's health and Chao's trip, McConnell's youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her account on X, according to reporting from The Independent.
What This Means: The timeline and Chao's office statement aim to address public questions about why she remained abroad while her husband was hospitalized. The clarified details reduce the basis for the social media speculation, though some family members and aides have maintained a lower public profile during the coverage.
