In Tyre, mourners gathered to mark the start of Muharram against a backdrop of widespread destruction from the Israel–Hezbollah fighting. The coastal city shows extensive damage after intense airstrikes and ground incursions; Lebanon reports nearly 4,000 killed and more than one million displaced. Religious leaders framed the observance as a source of resilience, even as a reported ceasefire drew skepticism given past failed truces.

Wearing a yellow scarf bearing the image of a son killed fighting for Hezbollah, Iman Dilbani wept during a religious sermon on Friday in the battered southern Lebanese city of Tyre as residents observed the start of the Islamic holy month of Muharram.

Tyre, Lebanon's fourth-largest city, has been left devastated by months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Intense Israeli airstrikes and ground operations reduced many buildings to rubble, and damaged structures are visible on nearly every street.

Religious Observance in a City of Ruins

Hundreds gathered on a coastal vacant lot for a Muharram mourning ritual, many dressed in black and holding portraits of relatives killed in the fighting. Portraits of Hezbollah deputy leader Sheikh Naim Kassem and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were displayed above the podium, and the site was ringed with red and black banners bearing the name of Imam Hussein.

Human Toll and Displacement

Lebanon's Health Ministry reports nearly 4,000 people have been killed in Israeli strikes, and more than one million Lebanese remain internally displaced. The conflict escalated after Hezbollah fired rockets toward northern Israel on March 2 in solidarity with Iran; Israel responded with sustained aerial bombardment and ground incursions into southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has also launched rockets and drone attacks into northern Israel.

“Given what has been happening in our world today, and seeing the martyrs and the destruction, no human mind can bear all of that unless they are a believer in the teachings of Imam Hussein,”

said Sheikh Abdulkareem al-Rahi, one of the event organizers. Speakers at the ceremony linked Imam Hussein's teachings of steadfastness and resistance to injustice with the community's current suffering.

At the gathering, Iman Dilbani, who lost her son in the fighting, said: "We learned from Imam Hussein's teachings the struggle and martyrdom, and to stay on his path and to offer our youth. I have three more sons, and I am willing to offer more of them if there is a need." Her words reflect the depth of grief and the extent to which religious values are informing responses to the conflict.

Ceasefire and Skepticism

A reported halt to fighting was announced on Friday, but many Lebanese expressed skepticism given the history of broken truces. Diplomatic efforts, including a U.S.-brokered framework with Iran, have sought to secure a broader ceasefire that would include an end to hostilities in Lebanon, but implementation remained uncertain at the time of the ceremony.

As Tyre's mourners commemorated Muharram, the scene — banners draped over ruined homes, portraits of the dead, and a community gathered in grief — underscored both the spiritual importance of the observance and the severe human cost of the recent conflict.
