Trump Walks Off Tarmac, Sidesteps Question On Iran As Talks Stall

President Trump gave a short remark about Iran on the tarmac in Chippewa, Wisconsin, then left without answering reporters' follow-ups as he headed to a delayed farmers' roundtable. Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi said there has been “no tangible progress” in negotiations and warned U.S. bases could be considered “legitimate targets.” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said negotiators are “approaching a preliminary nuclear framework,” but verification issues over Iran’s remaining stockpile leave outcomes uncertain.

President Donald Trump gave a brief response about Iran on the tarmac in Chippewa, Wisconsin, then moved on without taking reporters' follow-up questions.

“We’re doing quite well. The situation with Iran seems to be going quite well,” Trump said, before walking toward his car. A reporter called after him, “When was the last time you had discussions?” but the president had already left for a scheduled roundtable with Wisconsin farmers, appearing onstage more than an hour after the event was due to begin.

Contrary to Trump’s short statement, diplomatic efforts with Iran remain uncertain. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said this week there had been “no tangible progress” in talks aimed at addressing the conflict in the region, while leaving the door open to resume negotiations. Araghchi also warned that U.S. bases perceived as launching points for aggression toward Iran would be considered “legitimate targets.”

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said negotiators were “approaching a preliminary nuclear framework,” but he and other experts have noted outstanding verification problems, including uncertainty about Iran’s remaining nuclear stockpile. The possible outcomes of a preliminary framework therefore remain unclear.

Trump’s brief exchange highlights the gap between public reassurances and the complex, unresolved diplomatic and technical challenges on the ground. Officials on both sides signal that talks may continue, but important hurdles—verification of nuclear material and concrete progress in negotiations—have yet to be cleared.
