Rescuers are urgently trying to reach seven villagers trapped in a narrow cave in Xaisomboun Province after flash floods on May 19 blocked the exit. One person escaped and alerted authorities, but the status of the remaining seven is unknown. Thai divers arrived Sunday and are navigating flooded passages toward the area where the group is believed to be. Laos' foreign ministry declined to comment, and officials often tightly control information.
Seven Villagers Trapped in Laos Cave After Flash Floods — Thai Divers Join Race to Reach Them

Rescuers are racing to reach seven villagers who have been trapped since May 19 in a narrow cave in Xaisomboun Province, central Laos, after heavy rain triggered flash flooding that sealed the exit.
Rescue Effort Under Way
According to Laos and Thai rescue teams, a group of villagers entered the cave to search for gold when sudden flooding blocked the way out. One member of the group escaped before the exit was cut off and alerted authorities, but the condition and whereabouts of the seven remaining people are still unknown.
Bounkham Luanglath, head of the Laos' Rescue Volunteer For People, described the site as a confined chamber frequently visited by prospectors hunting for gold deposits and said authorities had repeatedly warned locals not to enter because of safety risks.
International Assistance and Cave Diving
State-run Lao National Radio reported that Thai rescuers arrived on Sunday to assist. Divers have begun navigating flooded passages toward the location where teams believe the group may be trapped, working against time and hazardous conditions.
“We are moving carefully through submerged sections of the cave and coordinating with local teams,” Luanglath said, according to The Associated Press.
Information and Context
The Laos Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment. Observers note that Laos is a one-party state that often restricts the flow of information, which can limit official updates during emergencies.
Rescue teams continue to assess conditions and press forward with diving and support operations as weather and cave conditions permit.
