Prosecutors say Kouri Richins directed relatives to mount a smear campaign against investigators and members of her late husband’s family while she was detained, including having a "gay dating profile" for the lead detective posted online. On May 13, Judge Richard Mrazik sentenced Richins to life without parole, calling her "too dangerous to ever be free." Prosecutors say she killed her husband for financial gain; Eric Richins died March 4, 2022, of a fentanyl overdose, and Kouri collected about $1.39 million in insurance payouts. Her lawyers plan to appeal.

Prosecutors say Kouri Richins orchestrated a series of attacks on investigators and members of her late husband’s family while detained pending trial, including directing relatives to post a "gay dating profile" for the lead detective online, according to a sentencing memorandum obtained by PEOPLE.

In filings submitted to Summit County Court ahead of her May 13 hearing, prosecutors describe multiple unfounded complaints and reports that they say Richins motivated or caused family members to make. The memo alleges she prompted bar complaints against the Summit County Attorney and Chief Prosecutor and made an unfounded complaint to the FBI about her husband Eric Richins’ business partner.

Targeting of Eric Richins’ Family

Prosecutors say most of the alleged post-arrest attacks focused on members of Eric’s family. They contend Richins retained counsel to press for the criminal prosecution of her sister-in-law, Katie, and later filed false complaints with the Department of Children and Family Services while her three sons were in Katie and her husband Clint’s custody.

The memorandum also alleges Richins "caused her family members to pursue federal firearms charges" against Eric’s father, Gene, after he removed Eric’s firearms from the home for safekeeping, and that she reported Eric’s sister Amy to police for alleged marijuana possession.

Sentencing and Judge’s Remarks

Judge Richard Mrazik weighed whether to impose a sentence of 25 years to life or life without parole during a May 13 hearing that lasted more than five hours and included victim impact statements and Richins’ final remarks. The judge ultimately sentenced her to life without the possibility of parole, saying he believed she was "too dangerous to ever be free" and noting the sons’ request for the harshest penalty.

Richins also received consecutive sentences: five years to life for attempted murder, one to 15 years on each count of insurance fraud, and up to five years for felony forgery. The court ordered those sentences to run consecutively.

Charges, Motive and Damages

Prosecutors argued at trial that Richins killed her husband for financial gain, believing she would inherit his multimillion-dollar estate and approximately $2 million in life insurance. After Eric’s death, Kouri Richins received about $1.39 million in insurance payouts; prosecutors are now asking the court to order restitution.

Eric Richins died on March 4, 2022; an autopsy determined the cause of death to be a fentanyl overdose. Authorities arrested Kouri roughly 14 months later and accused her in a probable cause affidavit of spiking her husband’s drink with fentanyl less than three weeks after an earlier, unsuccessful attempt on Valentine’s Day.

Richins’ defense team has announced plans to appeal the conviction and sentence.

Judge Richard Mrazik: "It is my wish that everyone involved in the case would eventually find their way to a state of peace."
