Mass Shooting Near Indiana University After ‘Little 500’ Leaves At Least Nine Injured

At least nine people were injured in a shooting near Indiana University in Bloomington in the early hours of April 26, authorities said.
The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) responded to reports of gunfire just before 12:30 a.m. local time on the night of the university's annual "Little 500" collegiate bicycle race. Officers arriving on Kirkwood Avenue found multiple wounded individuals and arranged transport to area hospitals.
Victims and Transport
Nine victims were taken to local hospitals. Five were transported by ambulance, one was taken in a BPD squad car and two were driven to medical facilities in private vehicles. An additional person who was at a nearby gas station was also taken to a hospital with injuries believed to be related to the incident.
Police Response and Investigation
In an early campus notice, Indiana University advised students:
"Police are responding to shots fired on Kirkwood Ave. Take safe shelter. Lock door[s]. Avoid the area."
The BPD said it is not yet known how many victims suffered direct gunshot wounds versus injuries from bullet fragments. The Indiana University Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. No suspect or suspects have been taken into custody, and investigators continue to work to determine the circumstances and motive.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses told local outlets the area was crowded with people celebrating the Little 500 when a confrontation between two women escalated. One witness said they initially assumed police would handle the disturbance but then saw a woman reach toward her waistband and begin firing, prompting nearby people to run. Another described a sudden commotion followed by gunfire and a rapid evacuation of the scene.
The Little 500, often called the "Little Five," is an annual race held at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the Indiana University Bloomington campus. Authorities have not released additional details about motive, the type of weapon used, or the current medical condition of the injured beyond their transports to local hospitals.
