Alleged Scottish Crime Boss Steven Lyons Extradited From Indonesia To Face Spain Charges

JAKARTA — Indonesian authorities on Wednesday extradited 45-year-old Steven Lyons to Spain after multiple delays while investigators completed a cross-border probe, officials said.
Lyons, described by law enforcement as a senior figure in an international criminal syndicate, was flown from Bali to Amsterdam early Wednesday and is expected to be transferred from there to Spanish custody to face charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, said Husnan Handano, a spokesperson for Bali's immigration office.
Arrest And Legal Basis
Lyons was arrested on March 28 after arriving at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport from Singapore when Indonesia's immigration system matched him to an Interpol Red Notice issued at Spain's request. A Red Notice is an international alert seeking the arrest of a suspect for possible extradition.
Investigation And Allegations
Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya said Lyons' detention resulted from a joint investigation involving Indonesian, Spanish and Scottish authorities. Indonesian police allege Lyons led a transnational criminal network based in Scotland that controlled narcotics trafficking routes between Spain and the United Kingdom and laundered proceeds through shell companies across Europe and the Middle East, including entities in Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.
Before Lyons' arrest, law enforcement teams in Scotland and Spain carried out raids linked to the investigation that produced multiple arrests. Additional suspects were reportedly detained in Turkey, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.
Companions And Local Response
Authorities say Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions who are believed to remain on the island, although Lyons told officials he traveled alone, said Bugie Kurniawan, head of the Bali immigration office. Spain's Interpol has identified the companions as members of the same criminal cartel, but they are not currently the subject of arrest warrants or Interpol Red Notices. Bali Police spokesperson Ari Sandy declined to comment on the ongoing inquiry.
Background And Context
Scottish media have reported that Lyons survived a 2006 shooting in Glasgow that killed his cousin, later moved to Spain and eventually settled in Dubai. Reports also say that last year his brother and an associate were shot dead in a suspected gangland attack at a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, southern Spain.
Next steps: Lyons will be transferred from Amsterdam to Spain to face formal charges. Prosecutors in Spain will determine the specific charges and next legal proceedings following his arrival.
