O’Malley, 33, of Randolph, Massachusetts, has been indicted on a voluntary manslaughter charge. Authorities say King allegedly carjacked a woman, dragged her from her running vehicle and drove off. Officers later located the stolen vehicle and ordered the driver to show his hands and shut off the car.

Investigators say King, who had a lengthy criminal history, raised his hands and partially opened a window but did not fully comply with commands. Body-worn audio captured O’Malley warning that he would shoot shortly before the vehicle reversed into a police cruiser and then moved forward again. Authorities say O’Malley fired three shots through the driver-side window, fatally striking King. O’Malley has pleaded not guilty.

Fundraiser and Family Support

The crowdfunding page, reportedly started by a fellow officer, says the O’Malley family is facing an incredibly difficult time and needs financial support. The campaign specifically notes that the family has two young children and that the road ahead is uncertain financially.

Official Responses and Investigation

Several Boston City Council members urged caution and warned against rushing to judgment while the investigation continues. Councilor John FitzGerald emphasized that split-second decisions in dangerous encounters are complex and should not be presumed malicious. Councilor Erin Murphy noted King’s criminal history and called for the release of police body-camera footage so the public can see what transpired.

None of us were there in that moment, and none of us had to make the kind of split-second decisions that come with a dangerous, fast-moving situation like this, Murphy said.

Fox News Digital reported that it has reached out to O’Malley’s attorney for comment. The case remains under investigation and is likely to draw further scrutiny as prosecutors, defense attorneys and city officials review body-worn and other evidence.
