Pope Leo Calls Middle East Violence 'A Scandal' and Urges Immediate Ceasefire

Vatican City, March 22 — Pope Leo said on Sunday that the deaths and suffering caused by the fighting in the Middle East are "a scandal to the whole human family," and he renewed his appeal for an immediate ceasefire.
As the conflict involving the U.S., Israel and Iran enters its fourth week, the pope said he is following developments "with dismay," and lamented the heavy toll on civilians and vulnerable communities across the region.
"We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, the defenseless victims of these conflicts. What hurts them hurts the whole of humanity,"
Speaking at his weekly Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo urged the faithful to persevere in prayer and action so that hostilities may cease and a path toward peace may finally be opened.
