Day 18: Frustration has mounted as many countries decline US requests to secure the Strait of Hormuz and the White House appears to rebuff Iranian diplomatic outreach. Israel is preparing an expanded ground operation in Lebanon, prompting warnings from Western governments about severe humanitarian consequences. Fighting and strikes have hit Tehran, Beirut and northern Israel, while drone attacks targeted sites in Baghdad and energy facilities in the Gulf.

Frustration is rising in the White House and among US allies on the 18th day of the US–Israel conflict with Iran, as many countries resist Washington’s calls to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and as diplomatic approaches from Iran appear to have been rebuffed. President Donald Trump repeated a vague timeline for the conflict’s end, saying it will be “wrapped up soon,” while Israel prepares a larger ground operation in Lebanon that has alarmed Western capitals over potentially devastating humanitarian consequences.

“Not NATO’s War”: European Union foreign ministers declined to expand naval operations around the Strait of Hormuz, resisting US requests to help reopen the strategically vital waterway. President Trump said he will “soon” name countries that have agreed to assist, while acknowledging many have refused. A German chancellor spokesperson said bluntly: “It is not NATO’s war.”

Diplomacy Stalled: Iranian officials reportedly reached out to the US Middle East envoy to reopen channels of communication, but two senior White House officials told CNN the president did not want to negotiate at this time. One official said the administration remains uncertain whether Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is exercising full control. Iran’s foreign minister denied recent contact with the president’s envoy.

Allies Growing Impatient: Diplomats from the United States, Europe and Asia are increasingly frustrated by what they view as the administration’s reluctance to pursue conventional diplomatic engagement. “If there was more diplomatic engagement on the US side, they might be able to get a more positive outcome,” one European diplomat said.

Alarm Over Lebanon: Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom expressed that they are “gravely concerned” about rising violence in Lebanon after Israel announced an expansion of what it had described as “limited” ground operations. The five governments warned that a full-scale invasion must be averted. Lebanese authorities report more than 1 million people internally displaced and at least 850 killed since the latest round of fighting began.

Trading Strikes Across The Region: Exchanges of fire continued. Hezbollah fired rockets and drones that wounded four people in northern Israel. Israel said it launched strikes on Tehran; the Iranian Red Crescent reported relief teams attempting to reach a Tehran resident trapped under rubble. Israeli airstrikes also hit the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Attacks And Disruptions Beyond The Frontlines: Drones targeted the US Embassy compound and a hotel in Baghdad early Tuesday, with video appearing to show air defenses engaging a projectile near the embassy. Iraq’s military reported an attack on the Majnoon oil field in southern Iraq. In the Gulf, two separate drone strikes preceded fires at the Fujairah oil zone and the Shah gas field in the United Arab Emirates, prompting a temporary closure of UAE airspace.

Diplomatic Ripple Effects: Mr. Trump said a planned trip to China to meet President Xi Jinping could be delayed “a month or so” because of the conflict. He has urged China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation remains fluid: diplomatic overtures, military actions and regional tensions are unfolding simultaneously, raising the risk of wider escalation and growing humanitarian concerns in Lebanon and across the Levant.
