Russian forces carried out a rare daytime drone assault on Kyiv, with Ukrainian air defences shooting down 194 of 211 drones. Debris fell in the central Shevchenkivskyi district and near the Independence Monument, but Kyiv officials reported no casualties. Officials said some drones appeared to use mesh-network communications, prompting experts to inspect wreckage to identify models. Separately, strikes in Dnipropetrovsk killed two civilians and wounded seven.
Rare Daylight Drone Strike Hits Kyiv: 194 Of 211 Drones Shot Down, Debris Falls On Main Square

Russian forces launched an uncommon daylight drone attack on Kyiv on Monday, Ukrainian officials said, sending multiple explosions through the city and scattering debris on the capital's main square.
Ukraine's air defences intercepted the bulk of the assault: the Ukrainian air force reported shooting down 194 of 211 incoming drones. Officials said the attack was notable both for occurring in daylight and for involving a variety of drone types aimed at the central Kyiv area.
"Around 30 drones of various types were targeting the Kyiv region," air force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian television. Ihnat added that some platforms appeared to use more advanced communications, including mesh networks, which allow operators to control drones in flight. "The not-so-good news is that these drones have communication channels – mesh networks and other channels – which the enemy can use to control them. The better news is that almost all of them were shot down," he said.
Experts were working at impact sites to identify the specific models and capabilities of the drones used. Historically, Russian long-range strikes have often relied on pre-programmed drones that cannot be piloted after launch; the apparent shift toward remotely controllable systems, if confirmed, could signal a change in tactics.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris landed in the busy Shevchenkivskyi district and in two western districts of the city. Reuters witnesses reported explosions and residents rushing to shelters as the strikes unfolded. Video footage showed police examining what appeared to be drone fragments beside the Independence Monument on Kyiv's main square. Kyiv officials reported no casualties in the capital.
In related developments, Ukrainian forces have recently struck targets in Russia's capital, and Russian officials said over the past weekend they shot down about 250 Ukrainian drones that were heading toward Moscow — an interception campaign described by Russian authorities as the largest attempted attack on the city in at least a year.
A separate Russian strike on Monday hit Ukraine's eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, where the regional governor reported two civilians killed and seven wounded.
The fighting follows Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of military and civilian fatalities on both sides.
